Brevard Wind Mitigation and A Four-Point Inspection

Has your insurer required a four-point inspection?

Do you need to make wind mitigation repairs? Certified Construction Contractors are licensed Roof and General Contractors required to make wind mitigation repairs that your inspector reports.

Four Point Inspection is something your insurer may want if the home is fifty years or older.

A four-point Inspection is often required when obtaining a new homeowners insurance policy or renewing an existing policy. The 4-point insurance inspection includes a limited scope evaluation of the following four systems:

(1) roofing
(2) electrical
(3) heating-air conditioning
(4) plumbing

The focus of the inspection is to determine the approximate age, components, and general condition of these systems.

Wind Mitigation:

A Wind Mitigation Inspection is a valuable inspection service that may reduce your windstorm insurance. Wind Insurance discounts are available for building features that reduce damage during high wind events. The Wind Mitigation discounts are justified because stronger, more wind-resistive structures have lower windstorm losses, which mean reduced costs to insurance companies. Most existing structures have one or more wind resistive construction features and may qualify for some Wind Mitigation insurance discounts.

Wind Mitigation Inspections are available for all single family homes, townhouses, condos and commercial buildings. Homeowner’s and Condo Associations also qualify for wind mitigation credits.

An Inspection will evaluate the following areas;

Roof Shape-Hip or gable roof.

Roof Covering-Shingle, tile or metal condition.

Secondary Water Resistance-Peel and stick underlayment.

Roof to Wall connection-Rafter or truss metal connectors or straps

Roof Deck Attachment-Nail spacing on plywood or decking material on truss or rafters.

Opening Protection-Type of covering for windows, doors and garage door.

Mitigation repairs required by insurance companies in the state of Florida are only performed by a licensed general contractor and roof contractor.

Certified Construction Contractors are certified by the state of Florida to perform all aspects that the corrections require.

Wind Effects

Wind forces are generated from natural events like thunderstorms, hurricanes and tornadoes. These winds create forces that attack the integrity of a structure in multiple ways: vertically, resulting in uplift forces, and horizontally, resulting in overturning, sliding and racking forces. Without proper design and construction, these forces can produce structural damage and even destruction. Modern design and construction practices, such as structural connectors used in a continuous load path transfer system, can effectively resist these forces by reinforcing the structure from the roof to the foundation.
